A lighthearted blog for today. A few years ago I posted these two photos to my personal Instagram:
How true, yes, how true. Today I want to introduce you to another best dog: Moose. We adopted him seven years ago this coming February from the Oshkosh Area Human Society. He was just 11 weeks old when we got him. We say that his birthday is December 12th. He came up on the Bark Bus from some kill shelter in Alabama, as the story goes, and made it to Appleton when he was nine weeks old. They kept him in Appleton for observation, gave him the good ol' "snip snip" (on Valentine's Day of all days), and then transferred him to Oshkosh for adoption because Appleton was over capacity.
I think warmly of Moose as our first child. We were at that stage in our life when we were thinking of having kids, but we just weren't there yet. Moosebear (his full official name) was a real-life confirmation that we were ready to take care of a living thing. Not just take care of him actually, but help him grow and thrive! And, of course, he made us better just by being in our lives. It was the moment for me when I realized that love expands exponentially - it isn't a limited quantity. When there are more lives that you hold dear, you have more love to share.
Our Oshkosh Area Humane Society is terrific (their social media game is on point), and I highly encourage anyone looking for a dog to consider adoption before shopping for a designer dog. Honestly though, all dogs are wonderful no matter where you find one in the end, but I have a soft spot for these good boys and girls who just need a little help finding their forever homes. There's a lot of praise to go around for good people in Oshkosh wanting to do things for our furry friends. Last month, the Kiwanis NEW Top Dog contest raised over $70,000 for local shelters thanks to their fun competition. I hope to see more groups like N.E.W. Pawsibilities come back to the area. And I would be remiss if I didn't make a plug for anyone studying veterinary sciences to join or open a practice here. We could stand to gain more pet vets in Oshkosh, plain and simple.
I love my Moose. Happy (early) birthday, buddy!
